The Fuji apple is an apple variety developed in the late 1930s by breeders at the Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Aomori, Japan, and introduced to the market in 1962. American apple varieties are Red Delicious and Old Virginia Ralls Janet apples (sometimes called “Rowls Jennet”). According to the American Apple Association website, it is one of the nine most popular apple varieties in the United States. The name comes from the first part of the city where it was built: Fujisaki.
